Mr Thomas Satyadas

Mr Satyadas first operated on me in March 2021 at the Alexandra Hospital when I was 84. I was admitted for laparoscopic removal of my gallbladder which went very well. The pathology report however came back positive for gall bladder cancer and Mr Satyadas suggested I should be considered for a liver resection due to the stage of the cancer. This was a much more serious and longer surgery and I was quite nervous about undergoing this given my age, I was now 85. I was reassured however as he told me he would only operate based on various tests to ensure I was fit enough and to minimise risk it it would be a laparoscopic liver resection. As in his previous consultations he had a really calming manner, didn't rush any appointment and explained everything very clearly which gave me a lot of confidence. The test results suggested my heart would cope with the surgery, he prepared me well in the 2-3 weeks leading up to the surgery by prescribing exercises and advised on pre-operative food and fluid intake. He carried out a successful liver resection in April 2021. I was well on the road to recovery when in August 2021, unexpectedly and with no connection to the gall bladder or liver operations, I was admitted as an emergency to Manchester Royal Infirmary with severe abdominal pain which was diagnosed as a bowel obstruction. Mr Satyadas was on call that night and told my family I had a 50% chance of survival, and given the urgency he would have to perform open surgery, a procedure he had previously avoided given my age but if I didn't have the surgery I would not survive. In addition there had been no time to prepare me and I was still recovering from the liver surgery. It is a testament to the surgical skills of Mr Satyadas that the surgery was a success. Now one year on and 86 years I can say to anyone of my age given what I have been through, they should have 100% confidence that they will have a great outcome with Mr Satyadas as their surgeon.

In September 2021 at aged 27 I was diagnosed with an inflamed gallbladder and gallstones. This was diagnosed by paying for a private ultrasound scan due to the long NHS wait. Up until this point I was misdiagnosed for a year with IBS by my GP. I knew this wasn't right so I made the decision to have a private scan. After the diagnosis I was placed on the NHS urgent waiting list for gallbladder removal surgery. However due to pressures the NHS are currently under from the knock on effect of Covid I was informed I would be waiting a long time for the surgery. While waiting for the NHS surgery my health declined. I continued to experience painful attacks that towards the end were occurring every night. Before making my decision to go private I felt unable to eat and was barely sleeping at night due to waking up in severe pain that would last till the early morning. My gallbladder also kept becoming infected. This resulted in visits to A&E where I would be put on antibiotics and sent home only for it to become infected again. After feeling unable to wait any longer I made the decision to go private as I had no quality of life at all at the age of 27. Through my own research I came across Dr Thomas Satyadas. I booked in for a consultation which was carried out the same week. During the consultation Dr Thomas Satyadas listened to my story and explained calmly and clearly what was going on for me. For example explaining that due to my gallbladder becoming reinfected numerous times that I had infact experienced mini bouts of sepsis which is why I was so fatigued. I finally felt listened to and felt someone finally had empathy for what I had been going through. Dr Thomas Satyadas picked up upon that I seemed more than ready to have the surgery. He then asked when I wanted the surgery to which I replied as soon as possible. The consultation was on Wednesday and if it wasn't for Covid procedures he explained that I could have been operated on the Friday. Instead I was booked in for the following Friday which I was so relieved by. On the day of my operation Dr Thomas Satyadas visited me and explained the procedure again and answered any questions clearly. He also outlined that I was first on his list to be operated on. The anaesthetic doctor also visited me beforehand and talked through everything clearly and calmed my nerves. I was very nervous when being walked down to the operation theatre as I had never had any surgery before or recieved any anaesthesia. However I was reassured constantly and before I knew it was put to sleep and woke up in the recovery room. Dr Thomas Satyadas visited me in the recovery room and told me all had gone well. He also phoned my mum after the surgery to update her on the success of the surgery. Dr Thomas Satyadas and his anaesthetic doctor visited me the morning after to check in and I was discharged feeling very sore (as expected) but relieved to finally get my life back. Today is 11 weeks after my surgery and I had my follow up consultation this week with Dr Thomas Satyadas who confirmed all has gone well. I finally have my life back after 2 years of pain. I can finally eat properly and sleep through the night. I'm back to my weight training which is something I've not been able to enjoy fully for a long time now. My family are also over the moon seeing how much happier and healthier I am since the surgery. I honestly feel that I've been given a 2nd chance at life. I will forever be grateful for Dr Thomas Satyadas. He has done an incredible job and the scars I have are extremely small and will be virtually unnoticeable in a few years time. I always felt fully listened to, respected and never rushed. He has a very calming energy that puts you at ease straight away. I cannot recommend Dr Thomas Satyadas enough.

I wanted to recount my own experience of laparoscopic hernia surgery to reassure anyone who may be nervous of the procedure (as I was). After 27 years with a (painless) bilateral inguinal hernia, I began to develop pains, especially after being on my feet for prolonged periods. I was cared for at the Alexandra Hospital (NHS funded), where I was treated by Mr. Satyadas. As this was my first operation, I was nervous about what to expect. However, Mr. Satyadas put me at ease with his reassuring and professional manner, listening carefully to my concerns and answering all my questions. In terms of the operation, my experience was entirely positive. Mr. Satyadas met with me again on the day to answer any further questions. The anaesthesiologist put me to sleep via a relatively painless injection into my hand and the next thing I knew I was waking in the recovery ward. I felt as if I'd had a great night's sleep, with absolutely no grogginess at all. I was transferred back to my room and after some food, I was able to walk around. There was some abdominal discomfort (to be expected) but it was quite mild. After a couple of hours, Mr. Satyadas visited to check how I was doing and a couple of hours after that I was discharged. I resumed more or less regular activities immediately (albeit a bit slower than usual), apart from exercise and driving. Over the following fortnight, I had occasional abdominal pain but it was rarely enough to warrant painkillers and even then regular paracetamol was sufficient (I had been given paracetamol / codeine by the hospital, but the pain was not significant enough for me to need these). By the third week, all pain had completely disappeared and the scars (three very small ones, closed with surgical glue) had healed. In summary, the care I received from Mr. Satyadas was exemplary. I could not have asked for a more reassuring and considerate surgeon and I'm delighted with how well the operation and my post-operation recovery took place. The other staff at The Alexandra were also marvellous.

I am a Consultant general and laparoscopic surgeon who operates on Inguinal (groin) hernias, in the NHS and privately. I developed a hernia and immediately contacted Mr Satyadas, as I have seen him operate (and we have operated together on cancer cases). I utterly trust him, and also his team of Anaesthetists and theatre staff. I have woken from yesterdays keyhole (laparoscopic) hernia operation with no pain, (a slight twinge only on movement) which I know will improve. I can’t recommend Thomas enough, for both hernia and gallstone surgery. A great surgeon, team and also Hospital set-up. Even if you have to travel far to see him, it’s worth it.
